I wrote a note to my police chief yesterday thanking him for
those first responders who helped me when I needed them and thought of my
beloved town that educated me for free, that provided for me, who needed it
then, transportation to school. I wished I could thank the many teachers who
educated me and provided inspiration for higher education. I wished I could thank, too, all those persons of
color, Hispanics and other immigrants who helped me when hospitalized not once,
not twice but three times after post polio issues presented life as a climb up
Everest. They carried my food to me, they carried other things for me that are
part of life and I thanked God or fate that they were there for me. Yes, it
takes a village to help all of us survive.
We do not know the day nor the hour that all of us will, at
some time, need the help of a stranger who may have come from a strange
land. We need both the doctor and the
custodian, the teacher and the sanitation worker, the physics professor and the
carpenter necessary to keep the wheels of life turning.
We must appreciate all those who may not be famous but are
the necessities of our lives. The great sages teach us love and not hate. We are in this together and we MUST learn to
live together or we shall all die separately and alone.
