Sanctions short of war can be brutal. It is costing
the Russian oligarchy too much money and Putin is among the oligarchs.
The Russian people are as clueless as Americans are about the
powers that send them to war. Putin's fawners are being played
like a violin. As long as Putin's posterior is not on the line just as
the US neoCons posteriors are not on the line when they send other people's children into the lion's den to be maimed and killed.
Howard Zinn, my guru of choice, made a statement I now live by: When
someone in power wants to commit you, your family and your nation to war ask the all important question: Who benefits and why?
Russians and we who fight the Pentagon's eternal wars of folly
should follow that advice. Who benefits and why? Usually the answer is
not they who fight the wars benefit but those who send them to do the
fighting making oodles of cash in the process are the ones who benefit. The soldiers who fight their wars are maimed, killed, psychologically damaged for life and economically ruined in the process.
Who benefits and why? Ask the damn question no matter if you are Russian, American, Chinese or a citizen of Swaziland. In the modern era the 1% oligarchy usually benefit from war. That means unless you are among them the ones who benefit are surely not you!
